"The birds burst up to escape the fire and gusted around her. Their wings scrawled serifs. She grabbed at them: she’d been wrong to use the ugly words, she thought wildly; she would make a living language. She would be The Woman Whose Words Flew and write her love across the sky. Wherever he might be, he would see them and understand. But the birds wouldn’t stay in position and all her words escaped her." This is the drawing for the eighth illustration for Rope of Words by Megan Kerr. I am … [Read more...]
Rope of Words 20
I am working on a grand project which will take at least three years - because it has to be squeezed in alongside everything else. This is an artist's book in collaboration with Megan Kerr. This time last year she knew she had been shortlisted for the Bristish Fantasy Short Story competition, then a month later heard that she had won. So far I have designed a font named Elva and I think I have finalised the page layout. I have also decided on how to represent the woman. This is an adult story … [Read more...]
Rope of Words 19 – The Woman 1
I finally found the sort of image that has inspired me for my Woman drawings / screenprints. Here is a photo of it - sculpture which I saw at Agatha Christie's house in Dartmouth. (Sound's like name dropping, except that its a National Trust property now). And annoyingly, I forgot to write down the name of the sculptor so I can't acknowledge him or her. Rope of Words 18 – Tearing the paper.
I've now got my order of the first 25 sheets of paper. Each book will use 13 half sheets plus there'll be a set of prints on their own, plus with mistakes it can easily mean double the amount. One little spill or splodge in screen-printing and it's damaged goods! I'm hoping to do a limited edition of 6 books, so might eventually use 100 sheets. Gulp! Time to start tearing the pages. Just look at those beautiful deckled edges. This is a proper paper tearing knife, also known as a "shoe knife" as … [Read more...]
Rope of Words 18 – Paper, Layout and update
I have chosen the Velin Arches (76cm x 56cm) because the deckled edges down the foredge are spectacular. I'll cut or tear each sheet in half to fold it for a page size 38cm x 28cm. The other fantastic thing about the Velin Arches is that the watermark is not very noticeable. If I find it worries me, I can always to an extra little embossed image in the bottom corner. Here you can see how I have progressed with the layout from the top plan to the one below. The text will now be in a single … [Read more...]
