I first came across this dear little bell-like flower in Charles Rennie Mackintosh's flower painting. I thought he'd invented a checked flower! But no, it really is checkered and moreover it is known as the Jewel of Oxfordshire. I wove some of my handprinted monoprints and laminated Chinese rice paper to the back to keep them form falling apart, then cut and glued them. Fritillaria
Well, I'll see where this one takes me in my watercolours. It's really large, (50 cm square) but now I have a mind to do more detail - perhaps a row of glass vases with wild flowers - watery and hopefully a bit abstract. It is so liberating to have given myself permission to experiment for a few years to rediscover the artist I might be. a breakthrough
I have been painting flowers for a couple of years now and somehow with the idea of large floating flowers on a white ground, I just tightened up too much. Then I decided to paint the Fritillaria and took some photos before it drooped. This is a small delicate 'gingham' bulb which is also knows as Snakeshead, and is found in Oxfordshire.So I began painting on a large sheet of paper 50c x 50cm, somewhat tightly and very neatly, but got a few splashes on the paper.
