Portrait of a House Homeschooling in Lockdown

March 28, 2020 by Lin Kerr Leave a Comment

Izzy, 9 and Hattie 6 drew their house as a surprise for Mummy.  I fetched the girls from school  and I set them up with a little bench each to rest the board on, and a cushion to sit on. They were excited about going to their own house secretly instead of coming home with me. Session1: Advance planning (5 minutes for them, longer for me)After planning the project together and talking about the secret gift for Mummy and Daddy, I stretched a piece of paper for each of them and we … [Read more...]

Church Paintings on Exhibition

June 9, 2015 by Lin Kerr 2 Comments

Everyone finished their church artworks in time for these to go on display in the church during the village fair. There wasn't a lot more to do since the drawing, but the collaged patterns gave the work a good "finish" which is more obvious in real life than in the photos. The last stage was to collage the tissue the girls printed. Originally the idea was to collage the church in the rubbed textures and the grass in the monoprinted textures, but this was going to be too 'busy'; so we kept … [Read more...]

Drawing the village church

June 5, 2015 by Lin Kerr 2 Comments

We started this mammoth 'collage' project in February - with my two granddaughters (9yrs & 6yrs) and three other girls (9, 7 & 7 yrs). The idea was to create some monoprints - view the post here; then do some rubbings of gravestones and inscriptions. The girls would paint a watercolour background, draw the church in a broad waterproof felt-tip pen (Sharpie) and glue their monoprints and rubbings onto it. Here they are, four months later,  in June, carrying their cushions to sit on … [Read more...]

Making pretty paper for collage – Child-art

February 19, 2015 by Lin Kerr Leave a Comment

The girls started off with making prints to cut up and glue onto the (eventual) drawing as a collage. I really believe that its so important to give kids good art materials. (You can't practise making a wedding dress from calico!) We used oil based ink which is water-washable and Chinese Rice Paper. The girls took impressions from embossed (velvet flocked - oh my!) paper and corrugated card etc. They worked with green patterns for grass and browns for walls. They loved rolling with the … [Read more...]

Portrait of the Village Church

February 18, 2015 by Lin Kerr 2 Comments

My granddaughters, 8 and 6 have now completed 3 "portraits" of houses, and I thought it would be lovely to do the village church. I invited three other little girls from our village who are 8, 7, and 6.  Today it's half-term and there was a brilliant blue sky despite it being only 10 degrees, so we started 'thinking and looking'. We wanted to get "a feel" for the subject so we walked up with viewfinders, and they each took a photo on my i-pad. We won't look at the photos again until the very … [Read more...]
