This is an amazing opportunity to make your drawings work as a resource for painting. By doing that extra step from photograph to drawing to painting establishes your value design and eliminates that extra bothersome detail. You are invited to join a secret ‘Think Notan’ only board on Pinterest to show your work. Each Tuesday you receive a pdf (6-8 pages) and you are asked to pin your drawing by Sunday night. By looking at one another’s drawings you’ll see a surprising variety of style and can comment on / like each others’ work, and I will comment too.
Workshop 1: 4 Values and The No frills sketch
Workshop 2: Adding Texture to your drawing
Workshop 3: Four ways to add depth
Workshop 4: Moving mountains – changing the composition.
All drawings are in pencil in a sketchbook or on cartridge paper.
This is the first drawing course and it will be followed by the second, Think Notan 2 – Composition and Perspective on 16, 23 Feb & 2, 9 March. This one is being run twice, for the people who completed the first one: 19, 26 January & 2, 9 February. You can these workshops in order, as the second builds on the foundations of the first one; but if you feel you want to dive straight in at Notan 2 or Notan 3, you may, especially if you already use your pencil in a lot of different ways.

Working with a 4-value drawing simplifies your view and enables you to cope with extra detail and frees you in your colour palette. (We are drawing in pencil, not painting). In the first workshop we concentrated on pencil skills and pencil grips and in this one we are looking at dynamic compositions understanding the rules of perspective. You are invited to join a secret ‘Think Notan2’ only board on Pinterest to show your work. Each Tuesday you receive a pdf (6-8 pages) and you are asked to pin your drawing by Sunday night. By looking at one another’s drawings you’ll see a surprising variety of style and can comment on / like each others’ work, and I will comment too.

Next year Oxford Summer School will run 3-4 weekends of courses so that there is more room for flexibility within the ‘new rules’. As soon as I have more information, I will keep you updated
