I painted this so that it could be a companion piece to the Open Tulip and I felt that the background needed to be a little different but still dark.
Initially I had less Alizarin and more green in the background, but it was so cold and lifeless, that I re-painted it.
The green (although it is a Phthalo green), is called Permanent Green Deep in the W&N range. Complementary colours make very rich dark tones as opposed to black. The White Parrot tulip is altogether cooler than the Open parrot Tulip which is tinged with pink. The white one was copied from a pink one, but again, I wanted the contrast and also exaggerated the lights and darks.
Now that I have my two large paintings for Art in Action, I need to do about 10 small ones. I will be in the UCARE (Urology cancer research) Tent where the tulip is used as a symbol of hope. Over the next few posts I will be showing you some of the cards and the origami tulips I’ll be doing as part of the interactive table.
