While I was visiting North Yorkshire Calligraphers, Ruth Rowland showed me a dear little book she had made. (There are two Ruth Rowlands in the calligraphy world. Northern Ruth R. was on my course one weekend and Southern Ruth R. was at Cinque Ports Scribes the following weekend)
Ruth had been on a course with Paul Johnson. He showed them the technique, but this is Ruth’s own design.
Ruth recreated the centre of the village, (her village?) around the market place.
The book is made from just one sheet of A4 paper. This is Paul’s speciality.
And here is the back.
Well done Ruth! If anyone local is reading this blog and they are interested I noticed that Paul Johnson is running a workshop at Ardington School of Craft on the 18th June, as follows: The tunnel book fascinated the Victorians and is still one of the most popular pop-up books today. On this workshop we will make a garden in which layers of scenery are viewed through a proscenium arch, as in a theatre. A special feature is that the construction is made from single pieces of paper joined with dovetail hinges and interlocking units – there are no folds. There is a second, different workshop on the 19th June
this is a fabulous piece of work – thanks for sharing. I feel another workshop coming on! x
We had Paul Johnson come to Victoria BC, he did a wonderful workshop on a different kind of pop up…his works are so wonderful. Thanks for showing this delightful book….
