Two Plums – wet off the canvas

I have now painted two daily paintings of plums and one is vigorous with energetic brushstrokes, while the other is much more softly modulated.

In the top one I forced myself to use those Filbert brushes made of hog’s hair #4 – about 15mm wide – and the resulting strokes are sometimes crude, but always expressive. In the second one, which I painted first, I was feeling mellow and used a flat sharp sable and so the paint was blended.

I think I enjoy a sable or synthetic flat square brush the most for the control, but the bristle brush gives more exciting results.
