This is one of a series of daily paintings in oils and I hope you enjoy this project. These will soon be available on a Silent Auction on my website
and a nugget:
This is an added extra to the daily painting – a technique, background information or a story.
The Gestalt Effect
Gestalt means “whole” and in art it is used where the mind fills in the detail and makes a whole image out of images that are partly suggested. We know what glass looks like, so if the blue bottles’ reflections are sketchy or approximate we think ‘glass’ and recognise it as being correct, without checking to see if it really is. The same goes for the twigs. In fact if one draws every single leaf on a tree, it is less likely to look like realistic, because the eye can’t absorb that amount of detail.
This is the gift to Art by the Impressionists in about the 1880’s. Of course it is totally weird that Impressionism is still called ‘modern art’, by some when it is 135 years old.
