I have postponed showing you the finished map, so that you can get to Art in Action if you live anywhere near Oxford!
In the Calligraphy and Illustration tent you will find: Freddie Quarterly (Ms not Mr)
…and Mark L’Argent. He tells me he wants to patent his amazing pen holder, but in the meantime I’d say the design is up for grabs! I love his work on old book pages – lots of exciting work.
Caroline Keevil was doing meticulous and beautifully spaced drawn and painted letters.
You would recognise loads of Ruth Rowland’s work from book covers such as “Memories of a Geisha” to the Dawn French autobiography and the ‘Welcome to London’ billboards at the airport. I loved her R’s, especially the polystyrene blots next to the top black one. Helen Scholes’s stand in the Newcomers tent is lovely, but I could not get near to take a photo as the tent was really busy.
I had not met Simon Sonsino before – he is an artist-calligrapher who lives in Newbury. As the day progressed he developed the artwork you cna see on the table.
Of course there is much more than just calligraphy at Art in Action and there are another 3 days with the promise of good weather.
Wish I could be there… lovely penholder, beautiful letter forms…
Thank you for sharing Lin – I am so jealous! I would have loved to go along as I wanted to meet Ruth – she is a fellow secret Scouser but I am at Uckfield Art Trail myself which finishes on Saturday evening. I am then meeting up with Gemma Black on Sunday – we are having a “Ditchling Day” as I live very nearby. Lots of luck to all those at Art in Action!
Hi Lin – thanks for the mention. Pleased to hear you like the Rs. They’re mostly cut out of wood and then painted or decorated – apart from the wire one which was made out of a wire coat hanger! Hope you had a great day at the show.
And I hope that AinA was worthwhile for you too. Its quite exhausting isn’t it!
Lin
Certainly is! Four days of talking has made me sound like Janice Joplin today! Looking forward to a quiet week in the studio.
