When I travel to Australia next week, while Dave keeps the home fires burning, please join me on my challenge! My goals: capturing the moment; drawing people; energy and colour in the sketch; urban sketching; a filled sketchbook; telling a story.
Here are all the tools I’ll be taking:
Sketching stool for comfort!
viewfinder for my square format sketch book
Paintbox with 14 colours
Small jar of walnut ink
Small enamel plate for mixing watercolours
nifty attachable water containers with screw-tops – (didn’t use)
Various drawing pens but in the end I only used two:
Sakura Pigma Micron 05 pen; .45 line*
and a Mangaka Sepia 01 pen*
Pentel refillable brushes
pencils, eraser – all in a see-through wallett
various brushes
Cutting knife with snap off blades to sharpen pencils
matchbox for pencil sharpenings
some bits of balsa wood with bevelled edge in front – this is to do some quick flat-edged painting – I love them!
also, not in the plastic folder:
toilet roll
Sketch books – cartridge and watercolour paper in a folder
water jar with clip-on lid
camera
bottle of water.
2 books by Gabriel Camparini – The Urban Sketching handbook : People in motion & Architecture and cityscapes.
(You cannot guess how exposed I feel telling all my blog followers of intentions. This could all so easily backfire and I will trail home with a bunch of empty sketchbooks. Which may make some people feel better. I’m involving you to motivate and encourage me and also so that the blog can continue for that month and is open and honest. I’m also going to try not to judge or assess my work – simply to present it as a record of a trip! I have had a lesson from my daughter on how to do my blog on the ipad and resize & upload photos. If I miss a day or two maybe the battery will have gone flat!. So, deep breath, pack the bag and go.)
Bon voyage! Forget that pressure just enjoy!
Hi Lin,
You look all set to draw 🙂 Ive noticed a lot of urban sketchers don’t bother with sketch books, they draw on paper napkins, banana skins, old paper and polystyrene coffee cups, tickets, leaflets, in fact anything that can take a pen. This is great as it is completely un-precious and throwaway. If its good, take a pic!
Safe travels and happy sketching and enjoy the family gatherings 🙂
Ronnie
I’m so tight I even only like good paper – time to become a loose woman!
Hi Bev I think it’s about just doing – process not product.
Join me and sketch too then we can do a show and tell when I return!
