I am currently in Singapore and I am recording my trip in sketches. I started without text or photos but I think there is sometimes a story behind the story so…

Yesterday I went to paint at the Singapore Botanical Gardens. I really wanted to paint in the ginger garden as the red and yellow structural flowers are gorgeous. Rain was ominous so I ducked into a shelter in the Orchid garden, sharing a bench with a Dutch woman who was with her Malaysian daughter in law.

The rain torrented down with riverlets pouring through the shelter around our feet. It was semi-dark and noisy, and I began painting a palm guessing at the light. Palms moved and blew about and my subject – the plants – did not stay still. The paper was damp and what I has painted needed to dry, so I put it aside for the.moment and began to draw Ratree after asking if she minded.

Hi Lin, Ratree is a beautiful piece of artwork! What a wonderful opportunity that was not missed. I am so enjoying your sharing as I have spent 17 days in Singapore some years ago! Enjoy your family time. Love, Sue ( I am moving to live in North Yorkshire in June – a romantic story to share one day).
Great Sue – hopefully you will be near the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. It is in the running to win the best museum award of the year. It is on the shortlist of 6. Love Lin
Lin, your shared travels are magic, thank you…and love to all y’all!!! xxx Lady Wisteria
Thanks Lois! Tried drawing monkeys in the jungle tree top walk, during today’s downpour.

I think the drawing of Ratree is a lovelly piece of work, you have captured her true to her name – “night flower”
Thanks Des, It was lovely seeing her transform from a young modern woman into a traditional Malaysian woman with serenity.
