Sleep Unit – Royal Brompton

January 7, 2015 by Lin Kerr Leave a Comment

Steven Appleby was commissioned to create artworks for the sleep unit. His informal handwritten notices and guides make this a very user-friendly hospital. Add his quirky sense of humour and he has turned a hospital into an Artspace. Come and hear Steven talk about his work at Letter Exchange, at The Artworkers Guild, London on 14th January 2015 (if you are within a 100 mile radius!)

Cartoonist and artist Steven Appleby (above) worked alongside the project team for a year, developing an understanding of sleep medicine with the help of clinicians and patients.  His images refer to the medicine, myths and mysteries of sleep, and reflect both the day and night time activities of the centre. Steven’s installations include a 3.5m-high glass screen in the building’s main reception, wall-drawings, a 30-piece corridor series, and new work for the bedrooms and clinic rooms. All these art works can be viewed in Into Sleep, a book created to celebrate the completion of Steven’s work in the centre.
